The Day My Life Changed
Changing the world by doing one simple thing.
The summer of 2015, my life changed forever, driving to Sisseton, South Dakota, on Highway 2 passing all of the wheat fields. I saw all these little kids on the side of the road that were either really skinny or had ripped up clothes. Some of them looked really dirty and it seemed to me that they needed some fun this summer.
I was spending the summer at my aunt and uncle's house, who had big plans for me while I was there. They were telling me about how they were going to sign me up for this camp, and I was going to hang with kids to help them have an amazing summer. I was telling them that I wanted to help those kids on the streets that didn’t look like they were going to have some fun actually have some fun. The next day, when we got to the church, my uncle signed me and my cousin up to not only be a volunteer of the camp, but to be a leader of the camp. After my cousin and I got signed up we were playing around and I saw this kid sitting on the side. I walked over to him and I asked him what was going on and noticed that he looked upset. He was telling me about how he wanted to come to the dinner tonight, but he couldn’t because his mom didn’t have the gas and she also just had a newborn baby.
I started thinking about how I was going to make this little boy happy. As I was thinking, something clicked in my mind: I am not just going to let this kid starve. While my uncle, cousin and I were making dinner, I told them that I met this little boy who wanted to come to the dinner, but he couldn’t because his mom didn’t have the gas to get him there.
After dinner, I wanted to help that kid get food for his family, so I went over to talk to my uncle and asked him if we could pack up the rest of the food and take it to that family. After we packed up the food, we loaded it into his car and drove an hour and a half away. Once we got to the little boy’s house we knocked on the door and the mom answered. When we walked up with the food she started to cry tears of joy. We started talking to her and she said she would have come to the dinner, but she couldn’t because she didn’t have the gas to come to the dinner at the church.
My uncle was thinking that maybe donating something else would really help her and her family. He thought Oh I should just donate some money because I just donate food, why don't I donate money? So he decided to donate the money and he said he didn't have enough, but a week before I came to South Dakota I had one hundred dollars in my pocket from babysitting, so I said, “Why I have this twenty dollar bill and I'm willing to give it to this lady she needs it more than I do.” And so after that, we left. Not only did I make someone's day, but she made my day and knowing that I helped a family that really needs it, with I now know that you can always change the world by doing one simple thing.
